Our favorite hike just outside Bergen, Norway

We love getting out in nature on our travels! Norway offers so many different hikes and trails which open up to some of the most breathtaking views we have experienced. We personally love finding the hidden gems that are more off the beaten path so we can experience new areas like a local. While visiting the Bergen, Norway area we found our favorite local hidden gem opening up to the natural beauty Norway has to offer. Don’t miss out on more breathtaking views that can be found within a 2 hour drive. The gorgeous views to hike along the Nærøyfjord will be worth the trip to continue exploring the beauty of Norway.

Osterøy is the second largest inland island in Northern Europe spanning 328 square kilometers (127 sq. miles). Osterøy is located less than an hour drive from Bergen. This area, being an inland island, is completely surrounded by fjords providing gorgeous views from just about any angle.

I have included directions below on how to get to the parking lot which offers multiple trails to choose from. The trails to choose from are Brøknipa or Bruviknipa, Borgasetra, Rispingen, and Olsnessåta. The drive out here is not for the faint of heart, especially if you are not used to driving up narrow mountain roads. The road leading up to the trailheads is narrow, steep, and has many hairpin turns so please drive carefully.

How to get there:

From Bergen Merge onto RV555 and use the middle lane to take E16/E39 towards Åsane continue on for 12 km.

Take E16 ramp towards Oslo, follow straight through three roundabouts staying on E16

Take Exit toward FV566 to cross over the iconic Osterøybrua suspension bridge (click here to located on Google Maps)

Follow the road and signs towards Bruvik

You will pass a white church on your right hand side (Bruvik Lutheran Church) (click here to locate on Google Maps)

Shortly after the church you will reach a T in the road (Hakenes or Olsnes), take a left towards Hakenes (click here to locate on Google Maps)

Continue up the road until you see a parking lot on your left hand side, park here and you have arrived at the trailheads (click here to locate the parking lot on Google Maps)

The below trails will be on your left if looking at the Allemannsretten information shelter:

Brøknipa/Bruviknipa 2.6km

Borgasetra 3.0km

We researched a bit and actually came out specifically to do the Brøknipa hike. After seeing gorgeous pictures of the surrounding fjords from the peak of this hike we couldn't resist the urge to find our way out here. We started our day off from the Brøknipa and Borgasetra trailhead, although we did not make it very far before having to turn around due to it being too muddy. We did not have the proper shoes for us to continue through the streams and mud with the start of these trails being in a low laying meadow. This only gives us a reason to come back better prepared next time!

The below trails will be on your right just across the road if looking at the Allemannsretten information shelter:

Rispingen 5.6km

Olsnessåta 4.4km

We may not have been prepared to hike Brøknipa but we came to explore so decided to hike up the trails on the opposite side of the parking lot. These trails are just over the road and involve climbing up a rocky trail up the mountain. The start of this trail boasts some amazing mountain views to your back and as continue you discover beautiful views of the fjords up ahead. You will find some levels spots along the way to take a break, enjoy the amazing scenery or eat some lunch. The pictures don’t do the natural beauty or experience justice so I recommend checking it out for yourself!
